Thanksgiving is a holiday on the fourth Thursday of November.
In 1863, president Lincoln decided Thanksgiving would be an annual event on the last Thursday of November. Seventy-eight years later, president Roosevelt decided Thanksgiving would be a national holiday on the fourth Thursday of November.
Today is Thanksgiving in the USA.
In the morning, American people watch a parade on TV. The most famous parades are in New York City and in Detroit. During the parade, beautiful floats and great bands march in the streets. Some people volunteer on a charity.
In the White House, the president presents the Pardonned turkey : he saves the life of a turkey.
In the afternoon, families and friends gather around a big feast and they have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, casseroles, marshmallows, pumpkin pie with whipped cream or ice-cream.
After the feast, they watch or play football, they watch special Thanksgiving TV shows or films.
The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, people start their Christmas shopping and there are major sales in the shops.
